Biography
The influential Yone Noguchi (1875-1947) was the first poet born in Japan to publish in English. He moved to San Francisco in 1893, and his first book of poetry, Seen and Unseen or, Monologues of a Homeless Snail, came out soon after. Noguchi also wrote magazine articles about his country’s art and culture, encouraging Western poets to try their hand at Japanese forms.
